Terada Kiyoyuki Hanshi, Saiko Komon (Supreme Advisor), was born on March 20, 1922 in Nagasaki, Kyushu, Japan. He studied a number of martial arts including: Kendo, Karate, Sumo and Juijitsu. In 1937 at age 15 he won a Judo championship and received an award for best Judo practitioner of the year. In 1941 he entered Shidojuku University where he met Shioda Gozo Soke founder of Yoshinkan Aikido. Other martial art teachers who influenced him in his early years were Akutsugawa Sensei (Sumo), Sone Sensei (Judo) and Osugi Sensei (Kashimaryu Jujitsu).

In 1943 he joined the army. After completing air frame and engine technology training in 1944, he became an aircraft mechanic with the air force until the war’s end. In 1945 he returned home to Nagasaki. In 1948 Saikokomon Terada now 26, moved to Tokyo to work for Miyakoshi company. In 1950 he started work for the military police in Yokohama and started training at the Aikikai Honbu dojo, taking lessons from Ueshiba Morehei O’Sensei and Ueshiba Kisshomaru Doshu.

In 1952, Saikokomon Terada now 29, conducted an Aikido training seminar for NKK Company and 85 police stations in Tokyo, together with Shioda Gozo Soke. In 1955, he conducted Aikido training for the Police Department in Yokohama and Camp Drake in Saitama. In 1955 Saikokomon Terada, age 31, co-founded Yoshinkan Aikido with Shioda Gozo Soke.

In 1957 he greeted US Senator Robert Kennedy and Prime Minister Nakasone at the Yoshinkan Honbu dojo. In 1961 now age 37, he left Tokyo and started teaching Aikido at the military base in Yokosuka, where he met and started to train a U.S. service man Amos Parker Sensei. (who had started his training under Noguchi Yukio Sensei).

In 1967 Saikokomon Terada made the first of several trips outside Japan to conduct an Aikido seminar in Honolulu, Hawaii. In 1977, Saikokomon Terada begins to teach Amos Parker Sensei again after a brief interuption due to Parkers military service in Guam. Saikokomon Terada would train Parker Sensei for another 20 years.

Saikokomon Terada was the president of National Yoshinkan Renmei and the president of Aikido Yoshinkan Seiseikai. On June 18th, 2002 He received the title of Saikokomon (Chief Consultant). Saikokomon Terada has spent time training practitioners all around the world! He has conducted seminars in Georgetown Canada, Melbourne Australia,San Paulo Brazil,St. Petersburg Russia, Windsor Canada and of course London Ontario. The Aiki Budo Centre in London is proud to have received special attention from Saikokomon Terada on several occasions. His personal visits along with those of his students: Amos Parker Shihan, Matsuo Senseis, and Nakazawa Sensei, has ensured Aikido will thrive and grow outside of Japan.

January 2008, Saikokomon Terada, age 85, received his 10th degree by the Yoshinkan Foundation making him the first to receive such an honor in Yoshinkan. He also has the title of “Saiko Shihan” of Yoshinkan Aikido (the only one!).

On July 13, 2009, Terada Hanshi passed away at the age of 87.

Some members of the Aiki Budo Centre have the priviledge of wearing the “Seiseikai moniker” on their uniforms having tested and trained under Saikokomon Terada’s guiding eye!
